EU citizens arriving in UK being locked up and expelled
ETTW President Pierre-Yves Le Borgn’ says: “Europeans Throughout The World (ETTW) has been deeply shocked by the contents of recent press articles(https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/may/13/eu-citizens-arriving-in-uk-being-locked-up-and-expelled) reporting on the treatment inflicted by British authorities to several EU nationals arriving in UK airports to seek employment in early May. It is utterly unacceptable to deprive people of their freedom, to hold them in detention premises and to eventually expel them without respectig any of their rights. These treatments are in blatant breach of the relevant provisions of the Brexit agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union. They further violate the European Convention on Human Rights, of which the UK is a founding signatory.
ETTW supports the initiatives by several MEPs to denounce this situation and calls on the European Commission to take a swift position to ensure that the UK returns to a proper implementation of the Brexit agreement. ETTW urges the UK government to respect the provisions it itself negotiated and ratified. Even with Brexit, Europe must remain a community of destinies for all citizens living in the UK or willing to come and work there. This also applies to all British citizens living in the EU. Brexit is a sovereign decision which must be respected. Yet, what must be respected also is people’s rights. No humiliation or deprivation of freedom should ever be tolerated between Europeans.”
