In 2024, E.T.T.W. celebrated its 40th year since its establishment. Four decades focusing on the rights of European expatriates and the well-being of each country’s diaspora.
Mobility has been and is fundamental right of all Europeans within Europe and outside. For centuries, Europeans migrated, returned and remigrated within European countries and outside, so much so that, that during the past two centuries, nearly 480 million European citizens and persons of European descent settled outside the European Union borders.
Of this amount, 60 million European citizens today live in a country outside the 27 member states of the Union. An additional 17 million in another country in the Union which is not their country of origin. There are at least ten European countries that have more of their population that lives outside rather than inside these countries. I originate from such a country – Malta.
Each person, family and clan has their own history and reason(s) for deciding to leave, return, remigrate to the same country or move elsewhere. Circumstances and challenges faced by these Europeans and determine their mobility are top on our agenda.
E.T.T.W. is an umbrella federation of associations and individuals directly related to European expatriates and diasporas. The three pillars E.T.T.W. stands on are:
- Strive towards full democratic rights for all European expats, especially the right to vote and the right to be represented in your national parliament;
- Ensure equal treatment for all European expats in par with their respective country of origin and at their countries of destination; and,
- Work towards improving our assistance to European expat, particularly in areas facilitation of consul protection, recognition of diplomas, social security, pensions and native language training.
